JLPT in Ethiopia
Can you take the JLPT in Ethiopia?
The honest answer, the nearest place you can sit it, and how to plan around that, without pretending the test is something it is not in Ethiopia.
The honest answer
The JLPT is not currently offered in Ethiopia.
Addis Ababa and Ethiopia do not appear on the official JLPT list of overseas test sites. To sit the JLPT, Ethiopian candidates travel to the nearest test city abroad.
The nearest place you can sit it
The closest official site is Nairobi, Kenya, which runs the test December only. Nairobi is the closest official JLPT site to Ethiopia and the most realistic option. It does not run a July sitting, so plan around December.
Other official African test cities include Cairo (December), New Borg El-Arab (July), Algiers (July and December), Tunis, Rabat, Accra (July and December), Abidjan, Kinshasa, Dakar, Cotonou, Antananarivo (July and December), and Stellenbosch and Johannesburg in South Africa.
Test cities and sittings are set on the official JLPT overseas list and can change. Always confirm on the official site before booking travel.

What about the EJU and the Embassy?
The EJU
The EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission), which some Japanese universities use, is not offered anywhere in Africa. Candidates who need it sit it in Japan or an Asian host country.
The Embassy of Japan
We could not confirm an official JLPT test site in Ethiopia. Japanese-language activity does exist in the country, so confirm current arrangements with the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia before you plan.
Prepare fully from Addis Ababa
Travelling to sit the test is the only part you cannot do locally. Everything else, the learning and the practice, you do from home. Atenu runs a beginner Japanese course built for Ethiopian students, building toward N5 then N4, with a path toward N3, with mock tests that track the sectional pass marks. Funding study in Japan?
